FIRST FLIGHT FROM BOSTON TO WEST END, GRAND BAHAMA - SPECIAL COVER SIGNED CO-SIGNED BY: CAPTAIN H. FIRST FLIGHT FROM BOSTON TO WEST END, GRAND BAHAMA Special cover carried on the flight when the Northeast Airlines opened its new air route from Boston to West End, Grand Bahama, signed by pilot H. Cook, less than a year before Northeast merged with Delta Special Cover signed: H.

This envelope was actually carried on the first Boston-West End flight. Boston and Maine Airline began passenger flights from Boston in 1933 and was re-named Northeast Airlines in 1940. The airline served New England, expanded to include transcontinental flights and Boston to Florida routes. Financially troubled by 1970, Northeast backed out of a merger agreement with Northwest Airlines in 1970 because the merger would have cost them the lucrative Florida routes.

Northeast had begun flights to the Bahamas in 1969, and added the route shown here to much fanfare. However, Northeast was still not viable on its own, and "the yellowbird" airline was merged into Delta Airlines on August 1, 1972. West End, also known as Settlement Point, is the oldest and westernmost town on the Bahamian Island of Grand Bahama.

Cook must have been the pilot on this landmark flight, but no further information about him is presently available. Corners and edges toned and worn. Postmark affecting signature at "NEA". See more material from these signers.
